Tomato Heaven

I really hate getting up early on the weekends. The problem is that by the time I drag myself from bed, have breakfast, then get ready to the market, it’s already 12 noon. Factor in travel time, and you’re looking at 1 pm at the earliest — four hours too late when it comes to shopping at the Greenmarket.

The old chestnut about birds getting worms early in the morning couldn’t be any truer. Especially when temperatures rose, as they did today, to 90 in midtown (with the humidity, it was probably triple digits).

Only one market pic today as I didn’t feel like walking around in the heat while lugging my produce and having to deal with the crowds while shooting food.

Heirloom tomatoes

On Facebook, I posted I was in tomato heaven.

This is it looks like:

Market basket for the week: okra, heirloom tomatoes, puntarelle, garlic chives, zucchini, summer squash, watermelon radishes and a baguette.

I’ll post tonight’s dinner in a little bit.

  1. Oh, I’m glad you got some okra!

I bought tomatoes to make a favorite: salmorejo (like gazpacho). Tomatoes seem expensive here: $3/lb. Yours look really nice.

I didn’t really buy much: tomatoes & peaches.

    • I spent about $40 for this week’s basket. Heirloom tomatoes were $4/pint. I got three pints worth — this will last me throughout the rest of the week.
